His and her walk in closets for professional organizer Rachel Rosenthal and husband Jon
As a professional organizer, Rachel Rosenthal is no stranger to creating solutions that make spaces work harder for daily life.
Working with California Closets for years on projects for her own clients, she and her husband, Jon, knew just who to call when they decided their primary bedroom’s walk in closets needed a full design refresh.

How California Closets did it
Rachel reached back out to Jacalyn Ollivant at California Closets Washington DC. Jacalyn had Rachel and Jon start by taking inventory of their clothes, shoes, and accessories. Jacalyn and Rachel then used this information to determine the number of short and long hang sections, shelves, drawers, and shoe storage options to include in the design. Given their long-standing relationship, they collaborated closely at every step of the process.
Other considerations also came into play to ensure the final result would truly cater to Rachel’s and Jon’s needs. In each closet, Jacalyn included a hamper with a removable bag to streamline laundry day. The couple also needed more shoe storage than the original closets allowed so Jacalyn considered generous rows of shoe shelves for both designs.

Final result
Even with a quick glance into both closets, it’s clear the final designs make the most of their individual spaces. In Rachel’s closet, the right and left sections were stopped short of the back wall to preserve access to the corners, and the placement of her short hang items along just one side creates a clean, streamlined look.
At Jon’s request, a long countertop gives him a place to empty his pockets at the end of each day, write notes, and display photos and other personal items. Together, the spaces depict a happy marriage of smart design and great function.
