The ultimate creative studio for editor, author and designer Darcy Miller
Celebrated author, illustrator, and Martha Stewart Weddings editor Darcy Miller has an expert eye for it all. After years of working from her home craft room, Darcy finally made the switch to her own design studio—a small, prewar apartment on Manhattan’s Upper East Side that she planned to reimagine from top to bottom. Creating custom organization was key! Working in small square footage with a bounty of art supplies, specialty items, props, and more, Darcy wanted functional open storage that would corral everything efficiently while also serving as a beautiful display for potential clients. She called California Closets New York to help.
How California Closets did it
Ready with a mood board capturing Darcy’s specific vision, design consultant Megan Garcia began devising a plan. Her biggest challenge: creating flexible storage that would easily accommodate Darcy’s constantly changing merchandise and materials. Treating an original fireplace as the focal point for one wall, Megan designed floor-to-ceiling open shelving which create plenty of space to fit a wide range of items, make swapping out items a breeze, and help the small office appear larger. Megan’s design also maintained an open area above the fireplace to showcase Darcy’s stellar styling talents for different occasions and projects. On the opposite wall, Megan incorporated built-in shelving to house binders and supplies, creating a productive and fully organized workspace for Darcy’s team.

Final result
The final result is organization at its finest: every item has a place and Darcy’s extraordinary presentation brings the beauty of it all to life. Decked out for celebrating, crafting, and creating all the magic that Darcy and her team bring to clients, the studio now stays orderly, too.
