Creating a playroom turned secret garden with designer Parker Larson
What the client wanted
Celebrated for her imaginative playrooms, interior designer Parker Larson sought to create a magical, multi-functional space for her client’s two girls. Inspired by Long Island and Richmond Botanical Gardens, Parker envisioned a colorful “Secret Garden” mural as the focal point — surrounded by creative stations where kids could play, learn, and grow. To blend whimsy with organization, she contacted Tami McQuade of California Closets NYC for help on custom storage and workspaces.

How California Closets designed it
Knowing Parker’s vision centered around bold color, texture, and pattern — including the custom “Secret Garden” mural — Tami created a clean and complementary storage system that allowed Parker’s design to shine. Shelving with hanging options organizes toys and dress-up clothes while built-in desks provide dedicated workstations for homework, all thoughtfully integrated, accessible, and timeless in a classic finish. Existing pillars and heating elements posed layout challenges, but Tami worked around them to maximize storage — supporting Parker’s goal of a playful yet practical room.

Final result
The finished playroom is a vibrant, whimsical retreat where fantasy and function meet. The custom mural pairs with coordinating rugs, colorful wallpaper, and custom storage zones for a purposeful space built for organized play — with monkey bars, a climbing wall, and swings to boot. Open shelves ensure toys are visible and accessible, fostering imagination and independence — inviting kids to explore and create in a space designed just for them.
