An organic oasis for plant stylist Hilton Carter

What Hilton Carter wanted
Renowned plant stylist and author Hilton Carter typically creates calm in his interiors via greenery, but for the custom closet shared with his wife, Fiona, he knew he needed to prioritize organization. Transforming a spare bedroom into a shared dressing room, the couple wanted a peaceful haven that felt connected to the adjacent bathroom’s earthy yet artsy aesthetic. Hilton turned to Bridgette Meushaw of California Closets Baltimore to strike a balance between function and flair — blending clean-lined storage with warm tones, colorful accents, and of course, space for greenery.

“I knew how important it was for my wife to have a larger closet that felt stylish but organized… when she sat in the completed room and said, ‘This room just feels so right’ was everything.”

How California Closets designed it
Collaborating closely with Hilton and his architect, Bridgette helped shape a walk-in system that felt serene, sophisticated, and true to the home’s style. The team worked around the challenges of an older home with lots of character — sloped floors and angled ceilings — using fascia, base, and scribe molding to achieve a built-in look. A soft grey finish paired with textured doors and drawers creates a quiet, neutral foundation for Hilton to layer in his signature design personality: natural materials, eclectic overhead lighting, bold accent colors, and perfectly-placed plants. Thoughtful touches, like illuminated shelves, showcase his shoes while gold hardware creates continuity between the closet and bathroom.

“Hilton just exudes chill and light. Working with him and his wife was an absolute dream.”

Final Result
A calm, cohesive retreat that feels organic to the home. The custom closet now flows seamlessly with the couple’s renovated bathroom and surrounding spaces, with enough organization to support everyday routines and enough soul to reflect Hilton’s personal style. Hilton even designed custom wood covers for the home’s radiators to complement the closet’s finishes for a truly one-of-a-kind space.
