Designer Heather Taylor gets a flex space for fun and focus
Heather Taylor and her husband fell in love with the cozy layout of their California home. But as their young daughters grew, so did their need for more space despite the hilly lot’s compact size.
The talented designer and founder of the beloved brand, Heather Taylor Home, also needed a dedicated area to focus on her growing textile and homewares business.
To create a craft room for the girls, and achieve a functional studio space for Heather, they would need to think outside the box — outside the house, to be exact. Their neglected garage provided the perfect canvas for creating a hybrid room solution.

How California Closets did it
Working with design consultant Cari Howe at California Closets Los Angeles, together they came up with a plan for the 475 sq ft space: Cari designed one entire wall of floor-to-ceiling cabinets, some with extra deep, reinforced shelving to hold Heather’s heavy fabric swatches. On another wall, she created a compact yet efficient workstation with upper flip-top cabinets for daily essentials.
A Fusion Track wall system keeps the girls’ scooters and helmets off the floor. Hanging baskets hold their craft and art supplies. A light neutral finish adds bright elegance while reducing the effect of the low ceiling.

Final result
Neglected no more, Heather’s reimagined garage now offers the functional office she needs when working at home and her daughters delight in creating their own art in the adjacent crafting space.
