Designer Emily Henderson’s renovated farmhouse gets a bright and airy walk in

A walk-in closet full of open and closed storage that also photographed well — that’s exactly what Emily and Brian Henderson had in mind when they started their closet redesign project with Amy Bodi at California Closets Portland.
No strangers to big renovations, the Hendersons were hands-on, collaborating with Amy to bring their vision for this shared space to life. While the farmhouse’s high ceilings posed a few design challenges, Amy knew she could solve the couple’s storage needs – and Emily felt confident she could work with California Closets’ materials and accessories to achieve the aesthetic she desired.

“I can enthusiastically state the obvious — having a well-thought-out and designed closet is pretty darn lovely.”

How California Closets did it
Amy started the design process by assessing the ratio of Emily’s items to Brian’s. Then they worked together to determine the best way to store each item, so they aligned with their daily habits. This also influenced certain decisions, like including doors and drawers in the design.
Because of the room’s high ceilings, Amy designed the top of the closet system with flat-front fascia and a top cap so the area above the closet could be styled with plants and other décor.
To complement the earthy aesthetic of the home, Emily chose a natural wood grain finish, while gold hardware offered a quiet sense of luxury.
One other unique element was a full-length mirror, which was centered on a wall opposite a large window, to reflect more light into the space.

“It’s a real embarrassment of riches, and I love every single second I’m in here.”

Final result
The final design is a one-of-a-kind bright and inviting dressing room with custom details like gold-tone hardware, faux leather-wrapped hanging poles, and Emily’s own woven baskets.
Thoughtfully-considered with personalized storage, the Henderson’s custom design creates space for the couple to enjoy this shared room comfortably for years to come.
