Editor Michelle Adams reveals the walk-in she’s always wanted

Light and airy walk in closet designed with custom drawers, open shelving, and hanging clothes racks by California Closets

Admitting she (basically) has California Closets on “speed dial,” Lonny founder and editor Michelle Adams is no stranger to the transformative power of efficient home storage.

So when she set out to completely renovate her 1990s ranch-style home outside Detroit, she already knew her walk-in closet was in expert hands.

The existing closet itself was functional, but with dated elements like honey-colored cabinets and wall-to-wall carpeting, it was going to need a more refined design to blend with the rest of the home’s refreshed interior.

“I’ve worked with the full-service team at California Closets here in Michigan for the past decade, so I knew I could tackle the closet revamp without requiring much assistance from my contractor.”

How California Closets did it

Having successfully negotiated with her husband (he gets the barn, she gets the primary closet), it was time to build the space Michelle had always wanted. So she once again enlisted the help of design consultant Janice Fischer of California Closets Michigan.

In addition to utilizing every inch of the closet for maximum function, Janice also took time to consider how the space would feel throughout the day. She incorporated warm and flattering lighting, mirrored doors and walls to echo the design of the bathroom, and glass shelving for display.

“I proudly leave the [closet] door open as it’s now just as beautifully designed as the rest of our home.”

Final result

With a crisp, white finish and crown molding, the reimagined walk in closet has an elevated aesthetic without feeling too “fussy.” Michelle even incorporated a simple lantern and a well-worn throw rug to warm up the space and make it feel welcoming.

The result is a classic design that’s personalized, highly functional, and as beautifully appointed as the rest of Michelle’s home.
