A creative sanctuary for artist Serena Dugan

What Serena Dugan wanted
Seeking a creative outlet, entrepreneur, artist, and textile designer Serena Dugan bought a vacation home in Shelter Island, NY — where she promptly constructed an “studio barn” to pursue painting and other passions as well as welcome occasional overnight guests. Sensitive to the serenity of her surroundings, she knew she needed a multifunctional design that would provide order to the open floor plan infused with natural light.
To bring her vision to life, she turned to California Closets Long Island designer Gabrielle DeMarino for a solution that channeled timeless style for all seasons.

“My barn mezzanine is my ideation space. It’s where my design library lives, sketch pads, and flat file drawers. Sometimes it’s the Salon — a quiet, comfy spot removed from the party down below. And other times, it’s a bedroom, with a Murphy bed and that tucks away out of view.”

How California Closets designed it
After an in-depth consultation and regular discussions to understand Serena’s needs and preferences, Gabrielle presented a double-duty design that elegantly blends functionality with artistry. First, in Serena’s loft office, a custom library with a mix of open and closed storage for books and keepsakes complements the barn’s vaulted ceilings and frames a large window looking out to the water. Adjacent to the library, Gabrielle’s design also included a sleek wall bed for Serena to host guests or just relax.

“This space feels intentional and curated, with every element serving a purpose. It’s a creative’s dream!”
