A contemporary closet in a country escape for creative director Adam Glassman

Custom closet with open shelving, hanging wardrobe and center mirror by California Closets

On a mission to decompress, Creative Director Adam Glassman of O, The Oprah Magazine traded his spacious downtown Manhattan loft for a small Hell’s Kitchen two-bedroom apartment and a Hudson Valley country home for weekend escapes. To turn the latter into a true place of serenity, he took his own popular advice and decluttered—starting with his wardrobe. After meticulously curating a pared down collection of weekend basics for Hudson Valley, Adam called California Closets Albany to help him create a custom closet to keep it beautifully in check.

“It was a thrill for me to work with someone like Adam who is an icon in the design industry; it was a totally collaborative experience. It’s so nice when a client ‘gets it’ and appreciates what our product offers in terms of style and function.”

How California Closets did it

Designer Melissa Hatch met Adam at the country house to kick off the design stage, where Adam shared inspiration photos of clean-lined, black-and-white spaces. Melissa first tackled the space challenge—small square footage and an awkward configuration—by fitting hanging storage against the largest wall, designing deep drawers to maximize an open niche, and adding a bench equipped with closed cabinetry for hidden shoe storage beneath the closet’s window. She then translated Adam’s aesthetic vision by creating a refined balance of bold black hardware with a fresh white finish, tempering the contrast with a complementary textured finish for added warmth.

“I couldn't be happier because it doesn't feel like a closet, it feels like part of the house.”

Final result

A clean, contemporary closet perfectly fit to Adam’s edited weekend wardrobe. Open shelving and hanging keeps the bulk of his clothes and shoes easily accessible, while a separate shelf stack behind a mirrored door hides select items and helps the small space feel larger.
