A closet with character for designer Sarah Sherman Samuel

Custom details, soft textures, and seamless storage blend historic charm with modern function.
When in-demand interior designer Sarah Sherman Samuel undertook the complete renovation of a Mediterranean-inspired brick house in East Grand Rapids, she brought her signature style to every corner — including the walk-in closet.
The castle-like home was in need of a massive renovation to preserve both its historic richness and architecture while updating to serve the modern needs of her and her family. The home they affectionately named “Italian on the Boulevard” deserved the best in all areas, particularly if the designer herself was going to live there.
Sarah wanted a closet that felt elevated yet warm, with hidden storage, shoe displays, and plenty of room to hang her favorite dresses. She partnered with Caroline Harvitt of California Closets Grand Rapids to reimagine the space.

“The Siena finish was made for this space, and I love how Sarah brought in her own hardware for the drawers, making the design more unique to her and the home.”

How California Closets designed it
From the start, Caroline and Sarah worked to create a custom solution that felt native to the home. Two windows — one west-facing, one east-facing — brought layout challenges, but also inspired the design. Caroline installed slanted shoe shelves beside the east-facing window to avoid blocking the light, and placed custom drawers beneath the arched west-facing window to create a unique focal point. The Siena finish, paired with oyster leather accents and Sarah’s own gold hardware, echoed the moody, tactile elements used throughout the home.

“It’s the most gorgeous closet I ever did install.”

Final result
A walk-in closet that blends seamlessly with the historic character of the house, yet stands entirely on its own. Calm, rich, and textured, the space now reflects Sarah’s design philosophy — honoring age and detail while incorporating quiet luxury. A thoughtful mix of open and hidden storage brings cohesion and function to the space — all cast in a golden glow by carefully preserving the room’s natural light.
